Geomembranes in AE applications | Seaman Corp

In early 2022, we published a blog summarizing the predicted outlook for the architectural, engineering and construction industry (AEC) for 2022. It was based on an ASCE article also published early in the year. There were several factors indicating improvement over the previous year and momentum toward pre-pandemic business levels.

Deltek, Inc., a project software supplier, performs a yearly survey of business outlooks by architectural and engineering (AE) firms. ASCE recently highlighted the 2022 survey results which represent an outlook deeper into 2022. The May 2022 published survey of 540 AE firms of all sizes—94% U.S. and 6% Canadian. Here are three of the significant conclusions from that survey:

  1. A 13% increase in revenues over 2021 is anticipated. This is the highest increase in 10 years and sharply more than the 2%-6% forecast at the beginning of the year.
  2. The top markets indicating growth are:
    • Water/Wastewater/Stormwater
    • Transportation
    • Energy/Power
    • Health Care
  3. Cost and availability of labor, material costs and supply chain issues plague all firms.

A separate source within the ASCE article indicated that investment and innovation will determine who comes out ahead.

It is noteworthy that the first two market categories are heavily dependent on public funds, a result of federal expenditures in the 2021 Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act. Geomembranes are widely used in these markets and are considered innovative both in design and operation, thus providing advantages to the designer, installer and owner.

High-strength, thermally stable geomembranes, such as the XR-5 copolymer, provide containment for water, wastewater and stormwater facilities as impoundment lining and floating covers. Transportation applications use the low hydrocarbon permeability and survivability properties of the XR-5 to protect Geofoam. These are geomembrane applications that demand a robust material, able to withstand the inherent rigors of construction sites, including rough subgrades and overburden. The use of Geofoam is a growing and innovative alternative to traditional fill materials in certain applications.
